Identify first, spray second
Reaching for a bottle before you know what you are fighting wastes product and time — neem does little against fungus gnat larvae, and sticky traps do nothing for mites. Take the plant to good light, turn leaves over, and look at leaf axils and stem joints with a phone camera zoomed in. Nearly every indoor infestation is one of four culprits, and each has a distinct signature and a different first move. A white sheet of paper held under a shaken leaf is the cheapest diagnostic there is: anything that falls and then walks is a mite, and anything that jumps is not.
Fungus gnats: a watering problem wearing a costume
Small black flies drifting up when you water are harmless as adults; their larvae feed on organic matter in permanently damp topsoil. The fix is cultural. Let the top three centimetres dry fully between waterings, switch to bottom-watering for a few weeks, and top the surface with a centimetre of coarse sand or gravel so females cannot lay. Yellow sticky traps at soil level catch the flying adults and let you measure progress. For a heavy population, a soil drench with a mosquito-bits solution containing Bti kills larvae without touching the plant.
Spider mites: the dry-air specialist
Fine stippling of pale dots on upper leaf surfaces, a dusty look, and eventually webbing where leaf meets stem. Mites explode in warm, dry rooms and can destroy a calathea or alocasia in weeks. Isolate the plant immediately — they crawl and travel on sleeves. Shower the whole plant, undersides included, with lukewarm water, then treat with insecticidal soap or a neem oil solution every five to seven days for at least three rounds to break the egg cycle. Raise humidity afterwards; mites hate it, and the conditions that invited them are the conditions to change.
Mealybugs and scale: slow, sticky and stubborn
White cottony tufts in leaf joints are mealybugs; small brown limpet-like bumps along stems are scale. Both suck sap and excrete sticky honeydew that turns black with sooty mould. Neither responds well to a single spray because their waxy coating repels water. Dab each insect directly with a cotton bud soaked in 70% isopropyl alcohol, which dissolves the coating instantly, then follow with a full-plant insecticidal soap or horticultural oil treatment. Repeat weekly for a month — the crawlers you cannot see are the reason people declare victory too early.
Thrips: check before you buy
Silvery scarring, distorted new growth and tiny black specks of frass point to thrips, the hardest common pest to eliminate because part of their life cycle happens in the soil. Prune the worst-affected growth, treat foliage with spinosad or insecticidal soap on a strict seven-day cycle, and add a soil drench or sticky traps to catch pupating adults. Expect six to eight weeks. Most thrips arrive on new plants, so quarantine every purchase for two weeks in a separate room and inspect it twice.
Prevention beats every treatment
Quarantine new arrivals. Wipe large leaves monthly — it removes eggs and lets you spot trouble at ten insects rather than ten thousand. Keep humidity moderate and air gently moving. Avoid overfeeding, since soft nitrogen-rich growth is exactly what sap-suckers prefer. Clear fallen leaves and debris from the soil surface. And when something does appear, act the same week: an infestation caught early is a ten-minute job with a cotton bud, and one caught late is a bin bag. Treat every plant within arm’s reach of the affected one at the same time, even if it looks clean, because neighbours are almost always already carrying eggs.
